Local Geology Course

Have you ever wondered how Lochaber’s dramatic landscape was formed? 

Take this opportunity to unearth our local landscape that involves mountain building, fire and ice.

Every Tuesday evening of March (6th, 13th,20th and 27th), 7-9pm, at West Highland College, UHI. Including a field trip on the 31st of March.

The first topic will include: mountain building, plate tectonics, folding, metamorphism and metamorphic rocks. Looking also at the terranes of the Moine and Dalradian Supergroups.

The second topic will look at: igneous rocks and how they are associated with plate tectonics, incorporating local examples.

The third topic is on: further igneous rocks, specifically intrusions as well as metamorphism.

Finally the last topic is split into two: sedimentary rocks surrounding Lochaber, including local fossils and how the ice age then sculpted the landscape and our characteristic scenery.
