Cow Hill

Half-a-day to spare in Fort William and want to get the best viewpoint? Cow Hill overlooks Fort William. Our local geology expert will take you there and explain how the landscape formed. With over 800 million years of  history involved in shaping the scenery of Lochaber, there is a lot to go through!

Highlights of the tour:

  • panoramic view of Lochaber’s lochs, glens and mountains:
  • Ben Nevis, a collapsed caldera volcano, the highest mountain in the UK
  • The Great Glen Fault, which has had 500km of lateral movement
  • Glaciated Glen Nevis
  • the chance of seeing Highland Cows

Start location at Lochaber Geopark Visitor Centre, 55A  Fort William High Street.

Start time is 12noon, but this time is flexible

End time/time taken is approx. 3 hours of walking. 3pm if setting of at 12noon.

Walking distance of 6.5 km,  reaching 287 m viewpoint.

Involves a mostly wide, firm path although some sections can be narrow, loose or rough.  Although this walk is close to Fort William you should be prepared for Scottish west coast weather. See our clothing and equipment page for more information.

Walking Grade Moderate

Cost and booking: 1 person £60 with a second person going free on the same booking. Extra persons on the same booking charged at 50% off, i.e £30 per person with a maximum of 8. Families (2 adults, up to 3 children): kids go free, just book adults in and let us know that children are coming.
