An aspiring UNESCO Geopark.

Lochaber GeoPark (Aspiring UNESCO Geopark) has been in existence for over a decade and at the end of last year, we applied to become a UNESCO Global Geopark.  We were delighted to hear at the beginning of April that our application had been progressed to the next stage, when the Global Geoparks Bureau agreed to authorise an evaluation mission to further assess our application.

On 16th – 20th June we played host to our UNESCO Evaluators, Professor Zhang Jianping from Beijing University and Dr Babbis Fassoulas from the Natural History Museum, Crete. We had the opportunity to showcase some of the wonderful places in Lochaber and and explain the work of Lochaber Geopark. Although we have to wait a while for the outcome of the evaluation which we won’t know until April 2017.

In the meantime we will be sending two delegates to the 7th UNESCO Global Geoparks Conference at the English Riviera Geopark, Torquay in September 2016.

The UNESCO brand is a designation that brings tourism, education, science, culture, natural environment and geologists together under one umbrella. We would go forward and market under this one brand to the benefit of all of Lochaber. You can find out more about UNESCO Geoparks in the British Isles on the British Geological Survey website.
