Isle of Eigg

Sgurr of Eigg

Sgurr of Eigg

Situated off our West Coast, in the Sea of the Hebrides, Eigg is one of the exquisite Small Isles, reached by ferry from Mallaig. Together with Skye and Ardnamurchan the Small Isles are sites of volcanic activity that marked the beginning of the opening of the North Atlantic about 60 million years ago. Fossil discoveries are currently being made in the Jurassic sediments below the lavas at the North of the island.

Highlights of the trip include:

  • From the sea, view piled lava flows forming the North end of Eigg.
  • Eigg’s volcanic past has led to the striking feature of the Sgùrr of Eigg, a ridge of a glassy volcanic rock called pitchstone composed of welded volcanic ash from a volcano on Skye.
  • Reaching the highest point of Eigg, An Sgùrr, 393 m. Marvellous views of the mainland and the Isles of Rùm and Skye
  • Columnar joints (pillar formations) in the Sgùrr show that the ash-filled a valley carved by a stream
  • Horizontal sheets (sills) and vertical sheets (dykes) of basalt
