The Vitrified Fort

The tour goes over Sgorr Chalum,  5 km due West of the summit of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, and provides wonderful views of the Ben and of Glen Nevis below. The route takes us past Dun Deardail, a Vitrified Fort where fire caused the rocks of the building to fuse together.

Highlights of the trip:

  • Learn the relationship between the Ben Nevis volcano and its surroundings
  • Most of the walk will take you over folded and recrystallized rocks of the Dalradian series. They are cut by vertical sheets (dykes) of volcanic rock
  • Reach Dun Deardail, a vitrified hillfort. The stronghold has fantastic views of Ben Nevis and Glen Nevis (when the weather is favourable).
  • Discover the link between the landscape and the fort’s structure
  • Reach the summit of Sgorr Chalum
  • Walk a section of the West Highland Way
