Shaping Lochaber’s Tourism

Did you know that Lochaber Geopark’s website (www.lochabergeopark.org.uk) was the most visited website in Lochaber according to VisitScotland? No. We didn’t either!
This week we were lucky enough to get along to some of the events hosted by Lochaber Chamber of Commerce in partnership with DYW. Thank you, to them, for organising a great week of “inspiring speakers, expert business training, networking and more to bring the Lochaber business community together”.
Yesterday we went to ‘Shaping Lochaber’s tourism’, which was insightful, and progressive, at getting those who work in the tourism sector of Lochaber to begin to think together.
A couple of highlights of the items that came up: sustainable tourism, the weather in Lochaber and ‘experiences’.
Lochaber Geopark aims to promote and protect the geology, and landscapes, of Lochaber. When tourists come to Lochaber they may not know that they have walked up an ancient volcano, stood on rocks that have been folded four times, visited an area that an element from the periodic table was discovered, stopped and taken pictures of scenery that has taken as long as 800 million years to form. They come across this information through our interpretation panels all across Lochaber, our Visitor Centre in Fort William, Darwin’s Rest Cafe Shop, Ardnamurchan Lighthouse museum and our info points around Lochaber. We hope people come to Lochaber and “See the landscape with new eyes” and appreciate the time it has taken to get the planet to look the way it does today.
