Friends of Lochaber Geopark Excursion: Magical Geological Tour around Loch Linnhe and Loch Eil
Sunday 13th October
Meet at the West End carpark at 10 am, to share transport if required.
The excursion will include:
- One way crossing on Corran Ferry (£8.50 per vehicle)
- Great Glen Tear Fault
- Dalradian and Moine metamorphosed sediments
- Igneous rocks: Granites and Dykes
Walking distances will be relatively short, up to 1km from the cars, but over rough shoreline ground.
Please bring a packed lunch, stout footwear, waterproofs, cameras, binoculars, walking poles if desired.
Friends of Lochaber Geopark Excursion: Fort William to Arisaig and the point at Rubha Breac to the west of Arisaig.
Sunday 1st September
Meet at Neptunes’ Staircase at 10 am, to share transport if required.
The excursion will include:
- Ripple marks in sandstone and preserved in Loch Eil Moine psammites
- pegmatite veins cutting Glenfinnan Moine rocks with metamorphic structures
- a multi-phase diorite intrusion
- folding in Morar Moine rocks cut by a Palaeogene dyke
- a dyke and cone sheet complex
Walking distances will be relatively short, up to 1km from the cars, but over rough ground.
Please bring a packed lunch, stout footwear, waterproofs, cameras, binoculars, walking poles if desired.
Friends of Lochaber Geopark Excursion: Isle of Kerrera
Sunday 22nd September
Meet at Gallanach Ferry slip south of Oban at 10.00 latest, to park up before the ferry at 10.30.
Return probably the 17.00 ferry.
The excursion will include:
- Dalradian metasediments
- A big unconformity
- Massive conglomerate beds
- An early Devonian Lorne basaltic lavas
- Palaeogene dykes
- All-day walk, with a stop at the Tea Room
Please bring walking boots, waterproofs, packed lunch and drink, cameras and binoculars. No great heights, but a lot of rough ground. Walking distance about 10 km in total, most on a Land Rover type forest track.
Ferry costs £4.80 return per adult. Dogs permitted, on short leads, usually lots of sheep and wild goats about on the island.
