Visitors from across the pond!

We were delighted to welcome representatives of the International Appalachian Trail and Cabox Geopark in Newfoundland to Lochaber Geopark between the 30th of May and the 1st of June 2019. They visited and admired our Visitor Centre, in Fort William. They were taken on field excursions by one of our Directors to Glen Coe, the Road to the Isles and Ardnamurchan. Newfoundland and Western Scotland are geologically very similar, they even look quite similar at the present day. Scotland was part of North America for 98% of its existence and only for the last 2% has been part of Europe, after the North Atlantic opened. The weather was poor for the first few days but when we travelled to Ardnamurchan the sun shone on the world-famous cone sheets around Mingary Pier. We visited the lighthouse and enjoyed the marvellous view back towards Canada!

Thank you to the Geographer for a fantastic meal on Friday evening.
