Kilchoan Primary School

Recently Lochaber Geopark worked with Kilchoan Primary School to help deliver part of their term topic. The children had been learning about dinosaurs and the earth’s history. Firstly, our staff geologist went into the school and provided a workshop to the kids on fossils: how they were formed, what we can and cannot learn from them and how to look at them scientifically. A few weeks later our staff geologist and Vice-Chairman went to Lochaline on a field trip with the school to find fossils in situ that were alive at the time of the dinosaurs and learn about the Scottish Fossil Code. The kids enjoyed passing the working Lochaline Quartz Sand mine. The children found many Gryphaea fossils and a number of smaller, flatter bivalves.

Thank you to Kilchoan Primary for inviting us to take the sessions, the staff were welcoming, and the pupils were well-behaved and engaged throughout.
